Best Practices for Using Social Media for Business:
A How-To Workshop

In March 2011, a team of Bay Area social media experts gathered at the CBS5 studios in San Francisco for a hands-on live seminar on how to use social media applications like Facebook and Twitter to enhance a business or career. The seminar covered the basics of the applications and best practices on how to use them for everything from news to marketing to media production. The panel also covered some of the widgets and applications that are available and what you can do with them.

Julie Watts, Moderator-Named Best News Anchor by the Associated Press in 2010

Julie is also an Emmy® Award winning Reporter & Meteorologist. She filled all three roles at CBS-5 before taking on the Consumerwatch franchise, CBS 5 Helps You.

Julie began her career as an entertainment reporter for BBC & Reuters-TV in Los Angeles. Then she was a Traffic Anchor, Weather Anchor and Reporter for CBS-47 in Fresno. Julie was also the voice of news and traffic each morning on the Central Valley’s Clear Channel radio stations.

In 2005 Julie joined KCRA in Sacramento as a Meteorologist and Reporter. It was there that she won an Emmy® for her live flood coverage her very first day on the air. She also won the first-ever Multi-Media Emmy® Award for an interactive piece she produced about Kenya’s violent 2007 elections.

Before returning to the Bay Area, Julie traveled to Sierra Leone where she shot, edited and produced a documentary about Blood Diamonds. It aired on PBS and won 2 Telly Awards.

In addition to news, Julie has also appeared nationally as a host on TLC’s “Designing Spaces”. But her favorite hosting gig came at CBS-5 where she discussed hot topics and interviewed newsmakers alongside San Francisco Chronicle Columnist Phil Matier.

Jennifer Neeley, Emmy®-nominated Public Relations and Digital/Social Media Consultant.

Jennifer has with extensive senior-level experience in public relations, digital/social media, new media development, strategy planning, editorial management, event management, promotional campaign development, content management, media relations and journalism.

Her expertise includes connecting with key influencers through utilization of cutting edge social media, SEO, SEM, content strategy, Web 2.0, PR 2.0 and Internet/content management and digital methodologies to increase online presence and maximize online thumbprints.

Her expertise in identifying, nurturing and growing communities online has enabled her clients effectively use social media to meet specific business objectives, such as enhancing brand awareness, customer loyalty and increasing leads. Jennifer has successfully led social media programs for a range of major B2B and B2C clients including Crimson Consulting, Microsoft, Seagate, Fujitsu America, StrongMail, PCTools and ShoreTel.

Jennifer serves on the Board, Ethics Committee and as Programming Director for Social Media Club.

John Boitnott, Consultant to a variety of sites and publishers on how to build their popularity on the Internet.

Leveraging social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Digg, Reddit and StumbleUpon, he helps direct millions of page views each month.

As the social media manager for Village Voice Media for 14 months, John helped drive traffic by the millions to the sites owned by America’s largest alternative weekly newspaper company and also trained editorial and marketing groups in best practices in social media.

John began his social media career while working at a major-market NBC TV affiliate web site, nbcbayarea.com - using his extensive newsroom experience and burgeoning social media knowledge to help bring traffic to the site. As a web editor he gauged performance, charted improvements, incorporated video, slideshows and reporter blogs.

Brian Shields-Known as “The Blogger,” Brian is the Online News Manager at KRON 4 Television, San Francisco.

In his position he is responsible for all KRON4 on-line efforts including: production of online news, promotions, and sales content for KRON4.com, supervision of web operations department and leadership of development team for major rebuilding of the station’s primary web sites.

Brian is blogger for The Bay Area is Talking (dot com), an aggregator of more than 400 Bay Area blogs.

Brian is co-organizer of the BrainJams conferences. He is advocate for Web 2.0 and Media 2.0 efforts within the community and the television station. He produces television news packages on technology and other issues.

Brian has served as the Morning Executive Producer at WESH - TV, Orlando, FL, Morning Executive Producer at KXTV - News 10 Sacramento/Stockton/Modesto and was Global News Manager at Applied Materials Inc, Santa Clara, CA.

Thank you for doing this webinar. I wish John Boitnott & Brian Shields had been given more time to speak. It seems that they had very practical & real tips but they did not get equal time.

If you liked John Boitnott & Brian Shields you'll be happy to know we are working on a "Part II" of this seminar. This time however it will be with each of the guys by themeselve going much more in-depth into certain parts of Social Media.

Sorry I took so much time! It was a bit unstructured and with the room structure, it reminded me of being in a classroom - I think I got into teaching mode! Hope you connect with the guys online and see their follow ups. Hopefully, they'll ask me back and I promise to restrain myself more!

Delving into the World of Social Media Video with Brian Shields

Our next NATAS SF/Nor Cal event will be held on Wednesday.May 18th, at the Bay Area Video
Coalition (BAVC) at 2727 Mariposa St., 2nd FL in San Francisco. The reception will begin at 7 p.m.
and the seminar will go from 7:30 p.m.-9 p.m.
Brian Shields’ presentation will answer many basic questions including: What’s the difference between social networking and social media? What is engagement in the social media world and why is it important? Why is social media important as a business tool for video makers?
He will cover aspects of Facebook including: Friending, different kinds of presences available on Facebook, creating a page, adding plug-ins, uploading and sharing video and others.
Regarding Twitter, Brian will examine: who to follow, trends, the differences between @replies, #hashtags, and DM Direct messages, Twitter Lists, various Twitter platforms, using Twitter “Follow Buttons” and widgets, and others.
Moving on to video sites, attendees will learn the differences among the various web video sites including YouTube, Vimeo, Ustream, Metacafe, Break and creating HD Video for the web. Participants will set up a page and upload a video to their site of choice.
Mobile is another exciting area that Brian will discuss because video and other content on smart phones is the fastest growing and most important platform for content right now. He will cover how to make web sites “mobile-friendly” and an overview of some of the top video-centric apps available for both iPhone and Android OS’s.
Attendees will learn about blogging/live blogging platforms, using RSS to aggregate and display blog posts, live blogging with Cover It Live and other platforms and applications for live events, news coverage, industry events, etc. Brian will close with best ways to keep up with all the constant changes in social media.
Here is where the interaction takes place, the Q&A session will include questions from the live audience and the online audience as Brian will use Ustream and his mobile phone to live webcast the event through the NATAS chapter’s Facebook page.

As Online News Manager at KRON 4 television, Brian Shields is pioneering the use of social media to expand and leverage the audience for local TV news. For more than a quarter-century, Brian has explored new ways to reach news consumers in television, radio, corporate, and online environments.
