BECA Students plan on conducting live interviews with participants as well.

Brooks Jarosz: Senior Communications Officer for the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office

A – MANAGING THE MEDIA…in an ever-changing world

In a digitally connected world, information travels in seconds, posing challenges to the media and public agencies. Learn what public information officers (PIOs) are responsible for, and the new techniques being implemented to quickly share critical information. From media requests and press conferences to the evolving communications offices within public safety organizations, get introduced to the public relations side of media and the unique opportunities to tell visual and community-based stories.

Jarosz BIO

Brooks Jarosz is the new Senior Communications Officer for the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, where he leads the Media Relations Unit and manages all external and internal communications. Jarosz develops strategies to improve community engagement and build trust. He also acts as the chief spokesperson and primary media contact.

Jarosz is an Emmy award-winning journalist with more than 15 years of experience in broadcast television news and digital media. He spent the last six years at KTVU FOX 2, as an investigative reporter, producer, and fill-in anchor. He also worked for ABC News in New York City, and local stations in Columbus, Ohio, and Charleston, West Virginia. As a watchdog journalist, he exposed cheaters and scammers, uncovered fraud and misspent money, and brought to light systemic wrongdoing and corruption.

Jarosz currently serves as president of the SF/NorCal Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). He graduated with honors from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. He’s also a graduate and member of the FBI Citizens’ Academy.

Chris Chmura: KNTV-TV / NBC Bay Area’s Consumer Investigative Reporter.

B – “Reinventing News Reporting with Visual Flair”

Like many TV reporters today, Chris almost exclusively shoots and edits his own stories. However, he also composes his own graphics and animations. You can, too! And quickly! Chris will show us how he taught himself (and is still teaching himself). You’ll see how he visualizes stories that have little to no video and how he aims to bring data to life— on deadline.

Chmura Bio

Chris Chmura is KNTV-TV / NBC Bay Area’s Consumer Investigative Reporter. He leads the ‘NBC Bay Area Responds’ team, which helps viewers resolve consumer disputes. Since the franchise debut in 2016, Chris’s team has helped people get back more than $7M. Chris joined KNTV in 2016. He has previously worked for WTVT-TV (Tampa), WFLA-TV (Tampa), The Associated Press (Washington, D.C.), CONUS TV news service (Washington, D.C.), and WCJB-TV (Gainesville, FL). Chris is a Gator — a Florida Gator. He’s an alumnus of the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications.

Arthur Yee: Cinematographer / Owner of SF Bay Camera & Grip Rentals Inc

C – “Mastering Multi-Camera: A Practical Guide to Hands-On Setup and Operation”

Arthur will lead a hands-on demonstration of a Multi Camera interview lighting setup using his Sony Burano 8k Cameras and Aputure LED lights. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers during the presentation.

Yee Bio

Arthur Yee is a BECA of SF State alumni (Class of 1999).  He also has a career in commercials, documentaries and Reality TV series Dog Whisperer and Intervention. His work has been screened theatrically, and on TV Networks as NATGEO, A&E, Netflix and screened at film festivals worldwide.

Beth Cloutier: Owner of Live Media Content

D – From the First Note to the Final Cut: Crafting a Music Video

Music videos are essentially short movies that expand upon the idea of the lyrics in the song. Learn how to craft a music video from the beginning stages to the final cut. In this session, we will review 1-2 music videos, discuss how the idea was conceived, as well as pre-production, production and the post-production process.

Beth BIO:

Beth Cloutier is an award-winning San Francisco Bay Area Producer/Director and Director of Photography for video and VR/AR productions. Her work is included in permanent museum collections such as the ICA Boston and MOMA. Beth has been a part of award-winning TV, music video, commercial and documentary productions. Beth has helped bring to life the vision of such musical artists as Briget Boyle, Westerner, Allen Ling, Opera Frontier, Jennifer Greer, and Strictly Elizabeth. Her music video work has garnered awards from Toronto International Women’s FIlm Festival, California Music Video Festival, and LA Women’s Film Festival. Her work has appeared in SXSW, TIFF, Sundance, Full Frame, LA Film Fest among many others.

Neumann Bio

Richard is the vision behind SUB2r, utilizing his 30 years of experience in the high-tech sector. He has held senior management positions at various companies, including Fibex (acquired by Cisco), Zaffire (acquired by Center Point), Micro Power Systems, Spectra Physics, and Amdahl.

Richard was also the co-founder and President of TriLumina, a company specializing in revolutionary VCSEL technology, and the co-founder of Ravix Financial.

Richard’s background is diverse and fascinating. His father was a rocket scientist. Richard’s mother was an accomplished ballet dancer and a Hollywood movie actress, and her sponsors in the Screen Actors Guild were Alfred Hitchcock and Carole Lombard. In high school, Richard collaborated with Steve Shlisky, a multi-award-winning editor and producer, to create films.
