November 22nd was the the 60th anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination. 

My father, who was the Dean of Journalism at the University of Nevada later in life, covered the events of that day. I’ve put together an article with his script, a letter to family and friends, and some photos and memorabilia from that time. I’ve also attached audio of one of his reports from that day.

NATAS SF/NorCal hosted a virtual live event with notable former war correspondents, a leading academic voice on the Middle East region, and mental health and – on the contexts, dangers and psychological impacts of war journalism, in the backdrop of the desolation of the Israel-Hamas War on Saturday, November 18th.

New York/Los Angeles, California – November 10, 2023 – The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) and CBS announce that THE 50th ANNUAL DAYTIME EMMY® AWARDS has been rescheduled to be broadcast LIVE Friday, December 15 (9:00-11:00 PM, ET/delayed PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)*. This year marks the 17th time CBS has broadcast the Daytime Emmy® Awards, more than any other network. ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT’s Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner will host the ceremony, set to take place at the Westin Bonaventure Los Angeles

Daytime Emmy Award-winning actress Susan Lucci, who was previously announced, will receive her Lifetime Achievement Honors at the gala awards ceremony. The nominations were announced in April and can be found HERE.

“We are pleased to set this new date with CBS for the Daytime Emmys to celebrate our Golden Anniversary,” said Adam Sharp, President and CEO, NATAS. Adding, “We know the loyal fans of daytime television have waited patiently to properly honor and recognize all of the deserving nominees and we look forward to the celebration we have all been waiting for.”

“CBS has a storied history in daytime and we are delighted to continue having THE DAYTIME EMMYS on the Network for the next two years,” said Mackenzie Mitchell, vice president, specials, music and live events, CBS. “We look forward to celebrating the show’s 50th anniversary and highlighting the best that daytime has to offer.”  

The Daytime Emmy® Awards have recognized outstanding achievement in television programming and crafts since 1974, honoring work in a variety of categories, including daytime dramas, talk shows, instructional programming, hosting, and legal/courtroom programs. In 2021, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) and the Television Academy jointly announced plans to realign the Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards to be organized by content genre, as opposed to program airtime. In addition, in recognition of the marked increase in content and entries for children’s programming, 2022 marked the first annual Children’s & Family Emmy® Awards, with relevant categories separating from the Daytime Emmys into their own competition and ceremony. All awards are judged by a pool of peer professionals from across the television industry.

The 50th Annual Daytime Emmy® Awards is produced by NATAS and Associated Television International (ATI), which produced Daytime Emmy Award ceremonies on The CW in 2009 and on CBS in 2010, 2011, 2020, 2021 and 2022. Adam Sharp and Lisa Armstrong are executive producers from NATAS, while David McKenzie is executive producer from ATI.

Herb Zettl Dies at 94 – Leaving Memories Galore

Dr. Herbert Zettl, distinguished Professor Emeritus of Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts (BECA) at San Francisco State University died Monday, October 30th at home in Forest Knolls, California.  He was 94

Having made a huge mark in the television industry, Herb Zettl taught, mentored, and touched the lives of thousands of students. Many work in the business today, thanks to the guidance and direction from Zettl.

Zettle, at the age of 94, died October 30, 2023 at his home in Forest Knolls, CA. He was a distinguished Professor Emeritus of Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts (BECA) at San Francisco State University. His teaching continues via several of his books that include Television Production Handbook, Sight South Motion, and Applied Media Aesthetics. As we approach the Gold & Silver Circle Induction Ceremony coming up Saturday November 11, 2023, Zettl will be remembered as a veteran who made a difference not only in our region but throughout the world. His books were translated into several foreign languages – Spanish, Greek, and Chinese – to name but a few.

Zettl, who carries many letters behind his name including a PhD from Berkeley and MA from Stanford, was inducted into the NorCal/SF Silver Circle in 1998. A few years later in 2012, He again was honored with induction into the Gold Circle. His career in broadcast journalism was later honored by the Academy with presentation of the Governors’ Award in 2016.

After 40 years at San Francisco State University, Zettl retired from teaching. But his legacy lives Before going in to teaching, Zettl worked at several television stations including KPIX/CBS in San Francisco. There, he was a producer-director, participating in numerous CBS and NBC network TV productions such as Edward R. Murrow’s Person to Person and various network specials.

In addition to his scholarly work and close connections with students and department members from San Francisco State University, Zettl was an accomplished painter whose art was shown in many exhibits. He was also a member of NATAS and Broadcast Legends.

To bid farewell to this giant in our business, a public memorial will soon be announced. Zettl is survived by his wife Erika, daughter Renee, son Alex and 11 grand and great Grandchildren.

Gone…but never forgotten.

Sacramento was ready to celebrate the high number of Emmy® Awards received by the region this past year! 

More than 50 members and non-members gathered on October 7 at Camera Kitchen for our Sacramento Mixer!

NOMINEES ANNOUNCED FOR THE SECOND ANNUAL CHILDREN’S & FAMILY EMMY® AWARDS

New York and Los Angeles  (November 2, 2023) – The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) today announced the nominations for the 2nd Annual Children’s & Family Emmy® Awards. In the second year of the standalone competition, it remains the biggest Emmy competition NATAS oversees. 

“We are very proud of the growth experienced in year two of the Children’s and Family Emmys, especially in the development and cultivation of the new categories dedicated to puppetry,” said Rachel Schwartz, Director of Daytime and Children’s & Family Emmy Awards. 

“Programming created for children’s and family viewing has a long history of leading the way in innovation and storytelling,” according to Brent Stanton, Head of Daytime and Children’s & Family Emmy Awards. “In this year specifically, a year so impacted by artists fighting for fair recognition of their true value, it is more important than ever to honor the excellence of their talents and achievements,” he said.

Nominees in one category judged in person — Interactive Media — will be announced later this month, as will honorees in two Juried categories: Individual Achievement in Animation and the newly-created Public Service Initiative.

KITV4 welcomes Jai Cunningham to the Island News team.

KITV4 welcomes Jai Cunningham to the Island News team. Jai has spent more than a quarter century working in television in Hawaii as sports reporter, morning show live reporter, and news anchor. 

Prior to joining the news team, Jai worked as the Public Information Officer for the Hawaii Department of Transportation, the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation and KHON2 reporter/anchor. 

He and his wife Carla have two daughters, Cara and Chay. Jai will be co-anchoring the KITV4 Island News at 6P, 9P and 10P.

Long Time KHON2 Manolo Morales Reporter To Retire

Manolo Morales says he learned everything he knows about television news at KHON2, Honolulu's FOX and CW affiliate as he gets set to retire.

Manolo Morales says he learned everything he knows about television news at KHON2, Honolulu’s FOX and CW affiliate.

The New York City native started out as an intern while studying broadcast journalism at University of Hawaii at Manoa, then moved into the studio as a teleprompter operator. After graduation, Manolo worked as a news photographer for four years before transitioning into on-air reporting in 1993.

“News reporting gives me a chance to help others,” he says. “Sure there were disasters and other major events that were covered nationally and internationally, but the best moments in doing this job were the times that I covered stories on regular people who needed help.”

When he’s not chasing down a story, Manolo can be found spending time with his wife and two dogs – most likely checking out new places to eat or trying different recipes.

Manolo Morales has been a trusted journalist in Hawaii for many years and will be missed.
